Didactica Viva: General and subject-specific didactics as living and responsive fields

20/5/2026 - 22/5/2026

Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic

In the last decades, we have witnessed a renewed interest in didactics, which is reflected in the emergence of new didactic models or the update of existing models. The field is alive and the interest in didactic issues continues to grow thanks to the impulses from different disciplines - not only education-related - and different cultural backgrounds. This makes today’s didactics interdisciplinary, international, and interconnected. Such developments make didactics ever-evolving, ever-changing and thus living and alive: didactica viva. The conference aims to bring together researchers from around Europe who are active and interested in didactics research - ranging from subject-specific to general didactics.

Contributions in relation to theoretical approaches as well as methodological and empirical studies and contributions from doctoral students are welcome.

The conference invites contributions with reflections on these topics, and/or their mutual connections or comparisons:

  • Forms of didactics - on topic-specific, subject-specific, disciplinary, general-subject, interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary or general didactics.
  • International and intercultural aspects in didactics - country/region-specific perspectives on didactics.
  • General theoretical underpinnings of didactics - constructivist theories, theories of education, theories of content reconstruction, theories of teaching and learning, etc.
  • Theoretical and methodological frameworks in didactics research, e.g. model of educational reconstruction, JDT (joint-didactics theory), or critical didactic incidents.

The following formats will be included in the conference:

  • keynotes for plenary sessions (50 minutes plus 20 minutes for discussion; on invitation).
  • round tables for plenary sessions (on invitation).
  • oral presentations of 25 minutes duration (plus 15 minutes for subsequent discussion) for parallel sessions,
  • workshops (e.g., workshops focused on research approaches in didactics, such as educational reconstruction, critical incident analysis, 3A methodology; 80 minutes),
  • interactive poster session for emerging researchers.

To submit a paper, please email an abstract (1 page, approx. 500 words including spaces) to Tomas Janik (tjanik@ped.muni.cz) by November 30, 2025.

The conference will be held in English.
